Terrapin coach Ralph Friedgen has named junior quarterback Chris Turner as the starter for Saturday’s game at Middle Tennessee.
During this morning’s ACC teleconference, Friedgen said that senior quarterback Jordan Steffy is out a minimum of three weeks with a fractured right thumb.
Steffy won the job in preseason camp for the second consecutive year but has not proven durable. Turner started the Terps’ final eight games last season.
Friedgen said junior quarterback Josh Portis, who took four snaps in the season-opener against Delaware, will also play. He said Turner, who is known for playing better than he practices, looked “okay” while splitting time with Portis in practice this week.
“I think it was very close,” Friedgen said of the preseason quarterback battle. “It was a very tough decision. I have a lot of confidence in Chris, just as I do in Jordan.”
